WHO WE ARE

The greatest challenges and heights of achievement await Phoenix’s strongest, brightest young athletes further above and beyond the rim than most will ever rise from a basketball court.

Celebrated basketball camps the world over have groomed young prospects into their generations’ premiere stars by fine-tuning the game’s foundational skills. Phoenix’s STEVEN HUNTER LIFE SKILLS AND BASKETBALL ACADEMY embraces the question, what lessons learned on Arizona’s playgrounds and hardwood could become lasting stamps that shape today’s young athletes into tomorrow’s heroes of their communities?

LIFE IN OVERTIME

Founder Steven Hunter’s ten-year odyssey competing with the world’s finest athletes in the NBA – including the 2004-2005 season in which he donned the purple and orange of our Phoenix Suns all the way into the 2005 NBA Playoffs – and education as a proud graduate of Depaul University refined his view of basketball as a teaching tool to shape shape stronger communities through stronger leadership.

Only an indescribably slim, elite fraction of young men and women worldwide will ever set foot on a professional basketball court. The ones who are not destined to perform at that exceptional level, he realized, would “turn pro” in arenas where their feats would live longer in deeper impacts more meaningful and memorable than every play to ever win an NBA Championship.

Life awaits past the final buzzer. As a Community Ambassador of the Phoenix Suns, Steven has never taken a commitment more seriously than uplifting the youth of Phoenix on a daily basis. He trusts mentorship through basketball to lay a foundation for Arizona’s next great generation.

The STEVEN HUNTER LIFE SKILLS AND BASKETBALL ACADEMY’s fundamental-driven approach molds young boys and girls into much more than tomorrow’s finest young basketball players throughout the 5-day intensive summer camp and 2-hour weekly academy sessions at schools throughout Phoenix. With the help of upstanding community leaders, organizers and respected professionals from across the Phoenix Metro Area, he strengthens better young men and women inspired by sportsmanship, self-respect, and a team-oriented work ethic.

When the ball is in the next generation’s hands, and the future is on the line, will they be ready for their shot?

WHAT WE DO

As a recipient of the NBA’s 2004-2005 Community Assist Award honoree and a Phoenix Suns Community Ambassador since 2014, Depaul University graduate and ten-year NBA veteran Steven Hunter has parlayed a dream of playing professional basketball into something greater than athletic glory.

THE STEVEN HUNTER LIFE SKILLS AND BASKETBALL ACADEMY approach to the game shapes the self-respect and leadership skills of the Phoenix Metro Area’s young athletes through a 5-day summer camp and two-hour weekly basketball academy sessions after school and on Saturdays at schools and community centers throughout the Valley.

Steven and his team of highly respected coaches dig deeper than endless scrimmages to zero in on skills and drills. Boys and girls come away from sessions having gained an appreciation for and greater mastery of the foundational fundamentals that every level of basketball builds upon:

  • Passing
  • Ballhandling
  • Shooting
  • Defense
  • Rebounding

Splitting each academy into two sessions divided between 6-10 year old boys and girls and those ages 11-14 promises a level playing field for all students. Limiting each session to an absolute maximum of 40 kids ensures that coaches can devote plenty of individual attention to developing each student’s fundamentals.

Two June and July all-day basketball camps will expand the skill-oriented weekly two-hour sessions into five days of 4-hour sessions practice with even more in-depth teaching from experienced coaches. This experience takes the same general structure of small groups organized by ages ranging from 6-17 years old and equal skill levels and adds a greater focus on one-on-one, three-on-three and five-on-five competition.

Just as importantly, campers will receive visits from professional pillars of the Phoenix community who “went pro” and bettered the world around them beyond basketball. THE STEVEN HUNTER LIFE SKILLS AND BASKETBALL ACADEMY is an equal opportunity for young boys and girls to experience leadership as teammates who make the players around them better with their actions – above the rim, beyond the game.

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT

Though Steven Hunter and his experienced, respected staff of coaches share a deep love for the game of basketball, THE STEVEN HUNTER LIFE SKILLS AND BASKETBALL ACADEMY treats the sport as a setting on a stage.

Within the environment of club basketball, our goal is to witness something far greater take shape.

Our approach to developing exceptional basketball players is not that different from the ideal approach to nurturing anything: sharpen the fundamentals first and foremost. Steven and our coaches provide a structured setting of skills and drills before focusing on one scrimmage after another. Teaching plays out with our players grouped into limited-capacity sessions that allow our coaches to spend time working with each boy and girl individually and always in equal age groups and skill levels.

Legendary NCAA coach Bobby Knight had a unique approach to recruitment. He wouldn’t promise players or their families a starting-lineup spot. He didn’t even promise playing time.

He guaranteed an education, a path to greater opportunities, whether they excelled on the court or not.

That same philosophy inspires us. We cannot and will not promise to groom professional-caliber players. We guarantee something even better: the young boys and girls who come out of our sessions will have experienced a fun environment in which they learned to make others around them better and lead their communities with self-respect.

For many, life begins anew where basketball ends. THE STEVEN HUNTER LIFE SKILLS AND BASKETBALL ACADEMY is here to introduce Phoenix to a brand new game.

Mr. Hunter not only teaches skills that apply on the court, but also throughout every day life.

Mr. Hunter believes the youth is our future. He strives to give back to the community through his camps and clinics, and also through his foundation – The Steven Hunter Youth Foundation.
